This document:
https://www.linuxjournal.com/article/9266

says an iPod should automatically mount when plugged in. But when my iPod's USB is plugged in the iPod icon does not appear on my desktop, and Rhythmbox does not seem toq recognizes its presence. The response to the command:

sudo lshw -short

shows no sign the iPod is mounted.

It appears there is something missing in my Ubuntu installation. What is the procedure to troubleshoot this?

My OS is Ubuntu 18.04

Did you happen to notice the date on the article you linked to is 13 years ago!
I don't use an ipod but it is an Apple product which is an extremely proprietary company. The link below gives steps you apparently need to take to get the ipod to work and is more current (for 19.04) so you could try that or wait for someone familiar with ipods/Ubuntu to post.

Thanks for the link. But this iPod has already been connected to a Windows 7 computer with an ITumes installation. iTunes was used to put a lot of content in the iPod.
