My computer has a 64-bit capable CPU, but only 2 gigabytes of RAM. I am aware that Ubuntu is slowly phasing out 32-bit, and I want the new updates that are not available in 32-bit. Should I upgrade?

Yes. Move to 64-bit install.
2 GB of RAM is indeed at the lower end, you might look into a lighter flavor such as Xubuntu or Ubuntu Mate.
You can look at this post for help on different flavors:

And, of course, if your motherboard will accept more RAM increase it as far as makes economic sense to you; it's one of the best and generally cheapest upgrades you can perform.

I use 64 bit on an old netbook with 1 GB RAM, works fine for me (aside from Firefox opening somewhat slower than normal).
