when you do a live session of Xubuntu there wont be a Broadcom wifi driver until you check the box and it downloads in Ubuntu. If I close out the session will the wifi driver
be there for the next time??

No, the medium is read only. No changes made will persist a reboot unless you enable/build a USB with "persistence".

can I enable persistence on an SD card boot...? how do I do that? The SD card works well for an Ubuntu boot on my Mac.

Actually, a USB stick can be made to be persistent if one uses mkusb
