Hello!

I have been wanting to upgrade my laptop from 16.04.4LTS to 18.04 LTS for some time.
When the system GUI asked I kept putting it off.

Today I'm off and wanted to get this done so I went in the Updater and told it to install the upgrade.
It asked for my admin password, which I gave it. It said it had to install some untrusted stuff - I said OK.
I looked like it started to install then just stopped.
I tried it several times, nothing.

So I found an online guide how to install by CLI (I've had problems in the past with GUI installers requiring input during the install but not telling me)
It ran for a while. When I came back, the screen was black, text only TTY login screen.

I can log in but can't get desktop.
When I reboot, the GNOME desktop icon (https://drive.google.com/file/d/1vLFhIFqrJ2DgF3fSxZDsqPfIWewqdg_T/view?usp=sharing)
The blue line started spinning then stops.
It won't go any further.

Any help would be appreciated. Otherwise I'm going to have to backup my home folder, wipe it,and do a fresh install (which I would really rather avoid)
