Ubuntu 14.04 was upgraded to 18.04. Version 14.04 worked good and the password in the 'Terminal' worked good. BUT, when the upgrade to 18.04 tool place the password in the 'Terminal' would NO longer work. And, to make matters worse, I can NOT recall the password. I tried a series of passwords that I had used, and some different variations of those passwords, but nothing has worked.

What could I do to solve this issue?

Take care. Thank You for your assistance.

I believe this tty issue is addressed by the fixes committed in the following bug: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1813873

With regard to the forgotten password, you can reset it from the root account if you boot the system in recovery mode.
