I have been having an ordeal lately since updating 18.04.
I had issue with hplip setup breaking synaptic because it was already pre-insalled when I applied new update from HPLIP.
That was solved but completely uninstalled hplip.

I reinstalled using synaptic ubuntu 18.04 hplip, as well as hplip-gui from repository. I did not use download from HP site directly, as everything that I read about my printer hp 1536dnf stated this should have been ok for some time. I did not run any command line shells or setups.

Before, I could use simple scan to scan from hp printer.
I am unable to scan now from USB. Note, I do not need network capabilities, USB is fine for printing and scanning. I do not need the fax.
Note that neither xsane or sane are working. I would take either. HP looked like it attempted to use xsane with the following error:
hpaio:/usb/HP_1536dnf?serial=... Error during device I/O

Any steps I should follow to have my scanner setup. I really would prefer not to reinstall all of 18.04 and run through hplip command line setup again?
