Hey guys post your favorite cool or usefull linux app here..

Ill start off with Stellarium http://www.stellarium.org/

it's an astronomy program that i find really useful and just fun as heck to play around with, it's in the repos.

here is an older screenshot

Another great astronomy program in the repos in Celestia. It is a 3D modelling of the solar system that allows time lapses and time slowdowns to watch non-stellar space activity.

And if you are really a geek, you can get the Babylon 5, Star Trek, and Star Wars plugins from thier official site and look at a few new solar systems.

i love thunar. i've never really liked any of the file managers, so i would just manage files in the terminal. but then, i found out about thunar. i love it's clean interface and unlike some of the other non nautilus/konqueror fm's, i don't have to do anything to access my camera.

KTeaTime. I've a horrible habit of putting on a kettle downstairs, starting to work on something upstairs on my computer, and forgetting about it. Finding an entire program dedicated to my tea was final proof that Linux has software for everything.

i like these mostly tiny cli programs (i haven't got Ubuntu installed atm, so some of the names might be abit off  i always 'tabbed' the names)

mp3split - for spliting mp3s and oggs

P0f - Passive OS fingerprinting tool

alltray - put stuff in the tray from the panel

i had something which let me listen to audio files too just by hovering my mouse over them. maybe it was mpg321 or mpg123 or ogg321

nautilus-actions is great too 8) it puts program actions in your right-click menu, like secure delete, or take MD5 - whatever you want to put there.

traceproto - makes cli graphs of traceroutes so you can see if and where you are dropping packets if your connection's slow.

etherape - below, shows network traffic.

Possibly quite an app, but XDMCP and SSH. These two apps make administrating my home network so much easier!

I'm Also getting to love Tomboy (the quick note app). It really does make "making a quick note" quick.

After that, Firefox, Apollon and Amarok.

all of these are included on the install CD!:

vim is the coolest text editor I have yet had the chance to learn/use.

grep is a little commandline tool that allows you to search for things using regular expressions.

gcc is the GNU C Compiler, the program that turns sourecode into executable binaries, and a crucial part of the GNU project. (must be installed as part of the build-essentials package)

grep and vim are both very useful at work. I am a big fan of the GNU text utilities anyway. I once read a very nice article called "Unix for Poets", wbout writing text analysis tools using shell scripting. I tried writing a authorship attribution script once, but failed miserably.

At home my favourite OS/Linux app is most definitely amarok.

I gotta say... Amarok is the tops. I was a big iTunes fan when I ran Windows but Amarok has so much more [and cooler] functionality that iTunes. There's really nothing like it as far as scriptable, controllable, and super user-friendly products go.

I was also really impressed with how cool Stellarium is. My roommate and I played with it for a good hour last night. Very slick interface and runs like a dream.

Inkscape
Openbox
vim/gvim
emelfm/vifm (why don't these get more development attention?)
Firefox
xmms
Thunderbird

Inkscape is my favorite Linux app. Better than commercial stuff in some ways. Openbox is my latest "discovery". The rest I use every time I turn on the computer, so I must like them.

Skippy, It's kinda like Expose on OS X, I finally could get rid of my second panel

sudo apt-get install skippy
cp /usr/share/doc/skippy/examples/skippyrc-default ~/.skippyrc

edit ~/.skippyrc file to bind to a key, my thinkpad had an issue with th f11 key so i bound it to f9 until I can figure out how to bind it to the "thinkpad" key

Kubuntu users should look into "Kompose" if they want a similar application.

Firefox - it was the reason I started using Ubuntu and I love the extensions and themes.

Enjoying using RadRails at the moment - it is in active development and each release makes major improvements.
