I'm running Ubuntu 18.04 with Gnome 3.0 DE. I can change the desktop background to a solid color, but is there a way to create a custom color? The available default color selection is very limited and I'd like to be able to darken the lighter colors. Thanks.

Try with a gsettings command as outlined here (https://askubuntu.com/questions/699131/how-to-change-desktop-background-colour-in-gnome). You can look up the color codes in for example the color picker of the Gimp.

If you don't use gimp or have it installed there are online color charts as well.
