Erratic behaviour of laptop when closing the lid

It was never solved. Has this problem any solution??
When closing the laptot lid several programs are launched randomly.
When I open the lid all this programs are running simultaneously.
Sometimes thre are several dozens of then and the computer freezes.
For instance today there were 8 instances of firefox, 10 instances of emacs, 12 instances of thunderbird, 9 instances of ubuntu software update and so on.
I had to reboot the computer.

A possible workaround might be to change the behavior when the lid is closed to "shutdown"
Another option might be to leave the laptop lid in the open position.
