I installed Ubuntu 18.04 as an additional OS with my Xubuntu 16.04 distro. It installed and booted perfectly. Overnight I ran the software updater and when I rebooted the system this morning I no longer see the grub screen and can not boot into the 16.04 distro. I tried to look on the forums but didn't find anything I thought applied.

reginam; Hello - Welcome to the forum :)

can not boot into the 16.04 distro.

But still able to boot into the 18.04 install ?
If so, then we can work from 18.04. Which install do you want as the "primary" ? There can be only one install controlling booting per hard drive in the legacy partitioning.

gotta start somewhere

Best to see all details of your system so see Boot-Repair in my signature below and follow the instructions there to run the Boot-Info-Script.

Do not run the default repair just yet but simply copy back here the pastebin link you get which will show us a lot more about your system.
