Is there some good GIS software available on Linux?

I was in a meeting today where we discussed using a GIS system, and somebody claimed there was no good GIS program available on Linux, I'm hoping on proving them wrong.

I found some projects on Freshmeat, but I do not know how they compare to the commercial alternatives (I never used GIS before).

Hi,
Have a look here:
http://grass.itc.it/
Now, if you need to compare with non Open Source commercial solutions, there's probably a lot to debate on what is good and what isn't. ;)
You'll find more resources over here:

Hope this helps.

Cheers,
Erkki

HostGIS (a GIS focused server side distro based on the Slackerware distro) shows a symphony of integrated tools. These tools can of course be installed on any distro - also Ubuntu linux:

http://www.hostgis.com

There is an UbuntuGIS initiative as well. This one, however, is focused on desktop use and as such is a fairly big package in the end of the day:

I would really like to see some initiative similar to HostGIS on Ubuntu.

When it comes to free GIS then the following software directory is your point of choice:
http://www.freegis.org

A edited directory which cares thouroughfully to include only GNU/OSI-liceces.

Choosing a GIS is a process like any other tool choice:

architecture (desktop or server)
target group
use scenarios and functions required (analysis or just data-viewer)
...

Well, if you need more help making your decision just ask...

greetings.
