View Full Version : App Indicator icons not working in 18.10

Some of the usual default AppIndicator icons are showing in the top panel of Ubuntu 18.10 - battery, network, sound, etc. - but those of some third-party apps are unable to be shown. I always get an error message on booting up because HPLIP wants to put an icon there, but it can't do so. UGET seems unable to do so, too. In both those cases, there is functionality conveniently available with those icons, so it'd be nice to have the top panel show them. (I've read that Gnome wants to remove that functionality. I don't know why ....)

I've tried using Gnome extensions but there isn't one that works with 18.10: Ubuntu AppIndicator is just a non-functioning place-holder, and KStatusNotifierItem/appindicator support doesn't appear to work, either. I hope someone, if not Ubuntu, is working on restoring this functionality, but I don't know that that's the case.

Has anyone found a workaround for this? A way to get appindicators to show in the top panel?

Thanks!
