Wondering

I'll speak for Hoary (the release coming in two days).

Its has Xorg. Not even Sid has that. The newest version of Gnome, KDE, and apps for each (it has a Gtkpod version that neither Sid nor Sarge have).

It has this support community. It has more packages overall. (not more than Sid I don't think though). It has a cooler name. It has more polish, is easier to install, and has a lot of sane defaults.

THE BIGGEST THING:

Its actually going to get released this month, while Sarge will be released --------?????

To complement what mr. Poofy well said, Ubuntu has a release fixed release date: every 6 months,

To complement what mr. Poofy well said, Ubuntu has a release fixed release date: every 6 months,

And support for each release 18 months after it releases...

Did I mention, Ubuntu owner went to space (http://linux.slashdot.org/linux/04/10/25/1634232.shtml?tid=163) ? beat that , debian. Beat that xandros, suse, linspire, redhat, mepis, *names 2000 distros*. Beat that, Bill Gates <-- he probably has one of those "push-a-button" teleporters from Star Trek though ...

On a serious yet similar note, Ubuntu has some money behind it. That was the first thing that caught my eye about this project over other small linux projects. No one wants to learn an OS, install it on all their computers, pitch it to their friends, etc, only to have the OS project fizzle out and die. Ubuntu isn't going away, at least not any time soon. That's a big plus in my eyes.

It has better support for desktop environment.

Friendly community. Unlike some distros community, asking an "easy [for u]" question won't get 15 a-holes to make of fun of you and call you names [boy I remember asking something in mIRC... I have never used it again].

Better than that. He doesn't mind if he doesn't make money off the whole thing:

"I'd very much like to make the distro project sustainable, because I've never had the privilege to work with such talented guys who work as hard as this team, and they deserve to be rewarded and to know that people appreciate the value they add every day. If it doesn't work utthat way, though, I'm honoured to consider it a gift back to the open source world, which played such a critical role in helping me build Thawte. So I hope it's commerce, though it may turn out to be philanthropy. Either way, it's still cheaper than going back to space, or hooking up with fast planes/boats/women, which I supposed would be Plan B."
