I have Windows installed already, and the partition shrunk so there's about 170GB free at the end of the disk. I intend to dual-boot.
I am able to boot onto my USB stick (with Kubuntu 16.04.1), and navigate the GRUB menu normally, but after attempting to boot any option, the screen will turn black and the device will hang (on-screen keyboard stops responding, does nothing when left sitting for 10+ minutes).
I am using a Lexar JumpDrive 32GB USB3.0 thumb drive, which has been confirmed to work for others, and I can boot to Kubuntu on other devices, just not the Surface.
Both Secure Boot and the TPM are turned off in the UEFI.
I have updated to the latest firmware/UEFI available on Microsoft's site, as of 2018/15/08
I have attempted booting both with and without the keyboard (no difference)
I have tried replacing the "quiet splash" kernel parameters with "nomodset", no difference
The black screen / freeze occurs immediately after selecting an option, there is no visible delay and no text scrolls by on-screen.
