Good question. I took a class on website design when I was working on my Bachelor's degree, but we only learned html. Fun class, though.

depends for what.

you have various opensource tools available and you can modify them to your liking.
for example: Wordpress, Drupal, Joomla

But there are also specialises like for example Opencart, zencart, Prestashop and few others for webshops etc.

then you have specialised tools for example to make a photo gallery (Piwigo), to share files (owncloud, nextcloud),

as for the tool to program - any text editor would do. there are plenty out there that are more targeted at these sort of activities. such as for example sublime, gedit, kate... there are also specific applications - for example KDevelop.

I predict that vim will finally be declared the single, best, one-true, editor that all platforms support.
Nano, notepad, and gedit will all die, die, die!

Right?

Vim raises manual text editing from a mundane chore into an art that rewards study and practice, like playing guitar, swimming, or jujitsu. from https://www.fastcompany.com/3037629/why-vim-an-80s-text-editor-is-still-the-ui-of-choice-for-power-users

If you've never seen vim used by an expert, you just don't know. As a developer, you NEED to learn vim just to enhance your personal productivity. BTW, I've never seen notepad on any router, but a minimal vim is there every time.

Learn vim like you learn piano. Daily practice with weekly additional skills to be mastered. Over time, you'll become like a ninja with vim and laugh at all other editors. It is hard to explain to power in vim, but ....

... allows Vim to access features from iTunes and Twitter as well as the Eclipse development environment, all using Vim’s arcane but beloved interface.

Get the power. And you can control git from inside vim too, but I wouldn't do that. Unix philosophy is to do 1 thing, extremely well, and nothing more. The entire OS is a software development environment and a dream to use, once you learn about the unlimited power.

Why ask about App's and then say web development? Apps = applications software not websites

Why ask about App's and then say web development? Apps = applications software not websites

Welcome to the forums. People new here don't always know what they are asking or can't always articulate it because they have so many questions. That's normal. Happens to everyone.

Apps could easily mean applications for web development, depending on your background. I'm old school, so I use vim for webapp development, but lots of people might think they need some tool to make a simple HTML page or static website. Just depends on your history.

And when you are really new, both software development and webapp development might seem the same. For many people, "coding" is a foreign concept and they think layout languages like HTML or CSS are coding.

But the OP, original poster, did a drive-by post and hasn't been back in a week. Probably time to unsubscribe for me, so others seeking help get help.

Another possibility is that things have changed over the years. A simple website, easily edited in a text editor and consisting mainly of text and the occasional call to an app hosted on the server or links to other pages used to suffice. These days, it isn't quite so easy, with a multitude of different devices to cater for, and greater demands being placed on the user's hardware.
