I have an HP Compaq 6715S laptop, from 2006.

The Ubuntu v. 12.04 will boot into it. The Ubuntu v. 14, v. 16 and
the later Ubuntu ones will not boot.

The modern 32bit Lubuntu and the 64bit Lubuntu also will not
boot. They will complain that "the processor #2 is not there".
Indeed, the 6715S that I have only has one 64bit core.

What can I do?

I'm not sure that any current Ubuntu derivative will run on hardware that old. What processor and how much RAM do you have? You might try AntiX or do an online search for Linux on older computers.

An AMD 64bit processor, 2GB of RAM. Thank you, I will look into the antixlinux.
