This is a great gtk2 engine, and I am using MurrinaCappuccino theme downloaded from your personal web site. Can you also make a Gilouche color theme for your gtk2 engine? Or somebody else in this thread. :) Thanks!

I did that Eternal Blue theme :P .

Oh and a request, I hope it's possible to add the glass effect to the panel also. Either as an option or as the default becuase right now it looks out of place :P

And nice update to the engine :D, loving it.

Hey what happened to the glass look on the menu selection?

pre 0.10 build we would be able to have a black shiny contransted menu selection.

but now in the 0.10 , we got the curved glass but the black shiny glass now looks plain matted with no contrast appearance.

In any case i love the murrine engine, it's very clean, and the best of all the theme requires no textures to accomplish it's look, sweat !!!

You have to get some themes to work with the engine. Get the theme-pack here (http://www.gnome-look.org/content/show.php?content=43073):)

I'm trying to get Murrine working in Dapper on AMD 64. When I try to run the config script (./config [options] from the source directory), I get an error that tells me GTK 2.8 isn't installed.

I did an apt-get install on libgtk2.0-0 (or something like that) which, according to the Debian site, should have me at GTK 2.8. Nothing was updated so it seems 2.8 shipped with Dapper.

So I tried running the config script again and got the same error. Any ideas? Better yet, is there a DEB file for AMD 64 floating around that I just haven't found yet?

I must be doing something wrong. I downloaded the deb package of gtk2 engines Murrine 0.10 from post #3. Double clicked the deb, installed fine. Can't find any references to Murrine in Themes Preferences. Downloaded the theme pack, extracted and placed the themes in /home/<your_username>/.themes - Nothing. I then removed them from there and tried /usr/share/themes - Still nothing. What am I doing wrong???

you have to install the "librequired"-dev packages in order to compile things on a debian/ubuntu system. Try something like apt-get install libgtk2.0-0-dev or something similar... then re-run configure and see what happenes (and apt-get new required libs)

You will find Murrina ecc ecc in Theme details under Theme preferences (remember murrina is an italian word that means a glass artwork, the engine is called murrine because it draws a lot of murrine! ...as murrine is plural)

I open theme preferences and I have three choices under "theme details", controls - window borders - icons. The only mention of Murrina, Murrine, et al is the Murrina-Eternal_Blue theme I installed after installing your deb package of gtk2 engines Murrine 0.10 from post #3. Other than that, there is no mention of Murrina.

One minor glitch with the Candy theme is that the launcher icons and the drive-mount applet buttons on the panel appear blurred, fuzzy.
This also occurs in Gilouche. I think when I reduce the font size the icons contract to their proper size. Only, I don’t want to. The fonts are good like that.

Anything that can fix this?

EDIT: I think I found it.
Changinf this from 4 to 3 fixes the blurry launchers

Hi ubuntu users, have you tried Murrine Configurator?
How does it works in your distro?

I have tested Configurator in edgy and works flawlessly. Regarding the new menuitems, i like them a lot, and im expecting the new version impatiently. And also i want to congratulate you for all your old themes, engines and artwork, and above all this murrine engine. They are all very sweet :KS

And for the people that prefer the flat version, maybe you can add another option for the new menuitems instead of replacing the old flat ones, no? If that is not possible, my vote is for the new striped/barber pole ones :)

Or maybe you can add an configuration option for making the stripe effect more subtle :?: or at least email me the striped version of the engine

I think that gtk isn`t finding the engine. Check that the engine is installed correctly. Look for the engine library files (libmurrine.la and libmurrine.so) in the engines folder (/usr/lib/gtk-2.0/2.10.0/engines) or whatever gtk version you have. If they are there run ldconfig (sh$ sudo ldconfig). Then try to change the theme. Hope that helps.;)

Are the other engines working? If they are, are in the same directory?:?:

You're welcome. Probably you've used a .deb for another ubuntu release or for debian. If you have edgy (with gtk-2.10) and install the dapper (or whatever release) version of the package, the .deb will install the engine in the folder of the gtk version the release have. In this case gtk-2.4.
If you have problems, you can always compile the engine yourself.
Anyway, enjoy the engine.

That will install the Murrine engine.

Grab the metacity (if you want) @ http://gnomethemes.org/?p=52

Put it in /home/user/.themes

Grab Murrina theme(s) after that. Put them in /home/user/.themes

http://www.gnome-look.org/index.php?xsortmode=high&page=0

Then go to system --> Prefs --> Theme --> theme details and choose your favorite (Murrina) Controls, window border and icons.

I use personally use metacity by bvc and MurrinaGraphite by thewayofzen with tango icons.

Hi, I've started a new thread in the development discussion asking for the inclusion of the engine, here: http://www.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=1567764. I really think the engine should be included in the distro, maybe even should be selected as the default engine :)

I like very much the last release (0.13) and also like the new look of the background with those random curves. However, i wonder if the rendering of those curves would affect somehow the speed of the engine. This curves thing remain me of the tiger-stripes widgets that were shown as part of the enchancements cairo would add to the rendering of gtk themes. (See: http://www.gnome.org/~seth/blog/xshots) I remember i wonder when we could have something similar, and now we're nearer :) Also, in the same page, those luminocity videos were awesome..

regarding "MurrinaEternal_Blue" the colors and engine are really very nice and i really prefer all the Murrina Engine over anything. my suggestion for this theme is....

Buttons: can they be rounded and have more height
Progres Bar: get rid of the diagonal effects (animation) and give it a glow or shine?
Tabs: can they have more thickness and shine to them?

keep in mind that i have NO idea about how to create a theme then alone an engine; however i do know how to enjoy them! :-D

thanks! and Keep up the Excellent work!!

Buttons: can they be rounded and have more height

round = slow = ubuntulooks
squared = fast = murrine

When cairo will be faster I will make a rounded option for buttons, for the moment no roundness since it's even slower than pixmap themes (see ubuntulooks or clearlooks).
For more height it's so simple! Edit x/ythickness of the buttons on the gtkrc

Progres Bar: get rid of the diagonal effects (animation) and give it a glow or shine?

Animations are always bad (cause a lot of new bugs)... but i think I could think about it...

Yeah I did. It’s gone. Just wanted to point it out.

As for the new Glaze style: It looks like it is bevelled in, not out. It’s more flat though, so I might actually prefer it. It’s just that it doesn’t look natural.

I haven't only swapped the hilight, in fact you can see a thin hilight and a shadow around the botton (before border) that indicate that the light is always placed at the top of the screen, as in other glazestyle

But now the lower half is brighter and the upper half is darker. MY brain interprets that as if the buttons are concave and not convex (because the sun would illuminate the top if it were convex, etc pp.)

Wondering about some issues im having with compilation on XUBUNTU EDGY EFT using Xfce 4.4 beta 2 and Murrine 0.20

I have eliminated the problem with the vertical bars showing on the tasks portion of my xfce panel.

But now im currently having issues with the Tasks themselves.
Before each task used to show in its own little "square" something like this
http://www.gnome-look.org/content/pre1/45325-1.jpg

But currently im having a problem where the only item that shows in its "square" is the active task. The others are just plain like the rest of the toolbar. This is illustrated here:

http://img220.imageshack.us/my.php?image=murrine20ru7.png

Could u or anyone else provide me with a solution or a deb that would correct this.. without reintroducing the bars on the taskbar ( as shown here (as u helped me with on gnome-look.org)

Please and Thankyou.. I appreciate your time.

these debs contain only the gtk engine i guess, install a gtk theme using murrine engine (there's plenty on gnome-look.org).
murrine-configurator is on cimi's site, and requires at least one murrina theme installed to configure it.

Hi,

Steps to getting Murrine running
1) Install the murrine engine (which you have done by the sounds of it)
2) Download a theme from Cimi's Official Website (http://cimi.netsons.org/pages/murrine/themes.php) or Gnome-Look (http://www.gnome-look.org/) extract the theme/s into ~/.themes
3) Download and install the Murrine Configurator (http://cimi.netsons.org/pages/murrine/configurator.php) then after the installation the program can be found under(in Gnome) System -> Preferences -> Murrine Configurator

Thanks so much for the screenshot post.
I have resolved all my issues finally. I figured something out..
when murrine didnt work i checked other gtk engines and found the same problem.. This didnt click at first but it made me realise that it wasnt a problem with MURRINE if every other engine was responding the same way.
Tracked down the problem.. resolved it.. and now im currently using the latest build of murrine.. glitch free.. happy.. and loving it.

Cimi.. thanks for everything.. i really appreciate the work u put into this project. Since its release i refuse to use any other engine.

Mad props.

Murrine 0.21 has stopped working properly after I upgraded yesterday to Edgy. When launching apps from the terminal, it says (translating from Spanish):

(gedit:6337): Gtk-WARNING **: Imposible to find theme engine in the path to «murrine» module

Appart from that, apps don't look as good as they should (Is it a problem with latest GNOME?):

Hello,

I am having some problems with Murrine on my new Edgy install.

I love Murrine, it was perfect under Dapper, I'd really appreciate any help to get my system looking as good as it once did!

The two main problems that I have noticed are a thin black border around open menus and windows, (including as the previous poster mentioned around the Main Menu) and that if you look at my panel next to where Firefox is open you will see that the little panel app handel is opaque rather than transparent as it used to be.

Any ideas? I have installed gtk2-engines-murrine-.21

Hi,

Try going to System -> Preferences -> Theme
Then click on "Theme Details" and then on the "Window Border" tab and try changing your window border to another type

Edit: I have noticed that when i have windows unmaximized on the desktop that i can see the borders, but when the window is maximized the left / right / bottom of the border disappears(99% time my windows are maximized).

ALL THEMES NEED TO BE UPDATED TO 0.30 VERSION OTHERWISE THEY WILL NOT WORK!!! YOU HAVE TO USE NEW MURRINE CONFIGURATOR 0.4 THAT WILL AUTO-UPDATE THEM OR REPLACE SQUAREDSTYLE TO ROUNDNESS IN THE GTKRC.

Please don't spread wrong voices... Murrine 0.30 adds roundness option that gives the user the ability to change the amount of roundness of his themes... So "squaredstyle" is replaced with "roundness", you have to use the new murrine configurator or open gtkrc of the themes and replace squaredstyle with roundness (noting that roundness = 0 is flat and more is more round! :))

Hi,

I think it this section that you need to edit in the gtkrc file

style "theme-progressbar" = "theme-wide"
{
xthickness = 0
ythickness = 0
bg[SELECTED] = "#e8e8e8"

I had some bugs when installing the new Murrine engine (post 0.21) : the theme I wanted to use wouldn't apply although it was 0.30-ready. In fact it applied to some applications but not others (e.g. Nautilus and the Gnome desktop).
I had to quit Gnome and reconnect. Did you try this ?

Anyway, I have a small problem with a Murrina (MurrinaNeo, found on Gnome-look.org) : the icons text color on the desktop is black, which is unreadable on dark wallpapers. How do I modify the theme so that I have the same behaviour that with most ones : white text with black shadow ?

I have installed Murrine, some themes, and the configurator as outlined in the first post and I am having a lot of problems. Originally when I would apply a murrine them using the configurator it would not apply to some programs such as synaptic package manager. i tried running the configurator again, selecting "none - ~/.gtkrc-2.0" This messed up all of my other themes using the gnome theme selector. No matter which theme i choose now the window border will be from that theme, but the gnome panels and the rest of the programs will be from the murrino theme. I would like to go back to the way I had it before I installed Murrine. Any help would be appreciated.

To have same themes applied also to synaptic I suggest:

sudo ln -sf /home/your-user/.themes /root/.themes

for the mistake with the gtkrc you have to do:

rm -f ~/.gtkrc-2.0

and then relesect your theme into gnome theme manager (or relogin)

I always copied the user themes to /usr/share/themes and did a 'sudo gnome-theme-manager' to install the same theme for the root user (Synaptic and other gksudo programs)

Theme looks good and all but I can't get them to work for me.

I followed all guides and non worked - well powder your guide was the best and I usually get themes to work this way.

Murrine Configurator did not install for me - my fault because I don't know how since the guide was not very clear on what folder to install it from when logged in as root so I tried to install it from the home folder.

Anyway I didn't get any of the Murrine themes to load but I got others to work for me

I hate to think what noobs from windows will do - if they ever dare venture onto Linux :-k

You know a lot of windows users just use it as they get it out the box and don't install anything:-\"

Maybe that is the only time it is ever stable.

So it seems I need to be a programmer to install software still (even when not compiling) or find some guides that work for me. Either way I hope I can design my own themes and share them some day in a simple package file.

The edgy one works correctly, I tested it on several machines. I'm building the dapper one as soon as possible, stay tuned ;)

Hi,

I have had a look at the Murrine package that you have created for Edgy and the changelog.debian is wrong

murrine (0.31-1) dapper; urgency=low

The dapper should be changed to edgy

And in Murrine package control file you got

Section: gnome
And the sections for it is

Section: GNOME Desktop Environment (universe)
or

Section: Miscellaneous - Graphical (universe)
The section in bold is the better to use :-)

You have to use a propre theme for windows border (the one on the ImageShack screenshot is a Windows Vista-inspired one). Basically, Murrina themes apply to buttons and widgets, not windows borders.
I guess you won't have difficulties to find a windows border theme that suits you on gnome-look.org. There are chances though that most Vista clones need Compiz or Beryl because of transparency and you might have to find a Metacity theme.

BTW: how works the murrine configurator? Which files does it modify?

I like Murrine but it is a shame I don't manage to get full transparency for my gnome deskbars.

I have a question, i can not seem to get it to work. I am running Edgy. I installed everything, ran the configurator. When i get to the last option the "would you like to use MurrinaFancyCandy now?" it says "desktop environment" and i am given the choice of gnome, Xfce and "None, -~/.gtkrc-2.0"
Whatever i click does nothing. shouldn't it be running?
and my second question is once i do get it to work, how do i go back to the normal theme/environment.

I use MurrinaFancyClearlooksEarth, Resilience and Human icons.
The engine (like any other else) doesn't support full transparency so not all widgets can be transparent.
It's a common issue i think...
My suggestion is to use "real" transparency, so install a program such as transset and on the terminal run transset 0.7 then click on the panel, youw will get real transparency

do a rm -f ~/.gtkrc-2.0 then select the theme manually under gnome theme manager

configurator modify gtkrc of the theme you have installed, for example for "MurrinaCandy"
/home/youruser/.themes/MurrinaCandy/gtk-2.0/gtkrc
at the section:
engine "murrine" {
[...]
}

i do not have "~/.gtkrc-2.0" so i cant remove it. I still don't understand which option to choose then, do i do "gnome" or none? and still no matter what i pick nothing changes..

I've installed your theme engine on both Dapper & Zenwalk. When selecting a Murrina theme, I only get the colours and not the controls.

I've installed from source on both systems. Dapper installed to: /usr/local/gtk-2.0/2.4.0/engines/ & Zenwalk installed to: /usr/local/lib/gtk-2.0/2.10.0/engines/

Why are the themes not working properly, can anyone help?

I used 'killall gnome-panel' in Ubuntu & I restarted Zenwalk, neither worked on either system.

If anyone knows how to get my themes back to their default look (they way they were when ubuntu was installed), I would appreciate it.

What version of Murrine did you have installed earlier?

This is a warning from gnome-look.org:

ALL THEMES NEED TO BE UPDATED TO 0.3x VERSION OTHERWISE THEY WILL NOT WORK!!! YOU HAVE TO USE NEW MURRINE CONFIGURATOR 0.4.1 THAT WILL AUTO-UPDATE THEM OR REPLACE SQUAREDSTYLE TO ROUNDNESS IN THE GTKRC.

NOW MURRINE 0.31 GETS SUPPORT FOR THE MODIFIED GTK2 BY AQD WITH MAC MENUBAR, USE ONLY WITH THE MODIFIED GTK2 OTHERWISE YOU WILL HAVE BUGS IN RENDERING

Does this mean that you cannot use murrine 0.31 with the default gtk2?

Cimi86, Does anything outside of the Murrine engine affect the theming? ie: I have a theme that looks one way on Edgy then another using Feisty using the same Murrine engine.deb.

The issue Im having is that in Edgy the desktop icons have no colored background to them. Thats what I want. You know that little square of color that can be behind text. In Fiesty its there.

Hello, I am really new to this, just found out about it 10 minutes ago. Currently I have the correct theme installed but I am missing the border (Metacity?). I am pretty new to Linux and Ubuntu so please bare with me.

I would like to get this...

http://img206.imageshack.us/img206/1995/200610182341271280x1024scrotww9.jpg

Now, I have downloaded MurrinaFancyCandy from Cimi's website and the colors are correct. It is just the borders and icons. If anyone can help me out I would really appreciate it.

Mike

try to search the metacity in gnomethemes (http://gnomethemes.org/?cat=3)
and for the icone Tango-Foxtrot use the Tango-generator script (http://gnome-look.org/content/show.php?content=49368) to get the link
wallpaper you find it under deviantart I think.

I have tried using SystemGX (http://gnomethemes.org/?p=42) as it looks correct except instead of a black title bar, its orange like the default Ubuntu look. I can change other styles and the border will change from that to blue, etc. When I use the MurrinaFancyCandy, where it should be black it goes orange.

Also I downloaded the Tango script and ran it but all I got was a folder of the icons in various sizes and scalable. How do I install this, I tried tar.gz them and installing through the theme manager but that file format was invalid.

Thanks again.

mikegabriel,

the theme in question is MurrinaFancyCandy -- it looks like MurrinaCandy, but the title bar is black ;) You may find it at the top of Cimi's theme page (http://cimi.netsons.org/pages/murrine/themes.php).

HTH!

P.S. To get it, you should click at the theme name (just above the screenshot). It's rather cryptic, but it's up to Cimi to change that ;)

P.P.S. The metacity is most probably one of the variants of Clearbox (http://www.gnome-look.org/content/show.php?content=25060).

Someone has suggested this thread be moved from Desktop Environments to Art & Design. I happen to agree, so it's moved.

Hmm.. I'm not sure this helps me.

I already downloaded MurrinaFancyCandy from Cimi's website. It works great. I wanted the window border that is used in the picture of it. As posted above, I found it at http://gnomethemes.org/?p=42. This is the exact one in the picture. http://img206.imageshack.us/img206/1995/200610182341271280x1024scrotww9.jpg
So I installed both. Go to themes, select custom and choose MurrinaFancyCandy and SystemGX. It looks correct except instead of black top is is orange.

Also, I still need help getting the Tango-Foxtrot icons.

mikegabriel,

my last post was based only on assumptions, but after you have reported your problems, I have actually downloaded the mentioned gtk & metacity themes just to verify, and the result was exactly as predicted (see the screenshot attached). Please note that in SystemGX, the spaces between the "minimize", "maximize", and "close" buttons are much wider in than in Clearbox-mistic, and the windows title is not left-aligned (as in Clearbox). I cannot reproduce the orange window title you get.

Ah yes, I forgot about the left align on the menu bar. I am experienced in Windows programming and web design so I may be able to alter the file to make it left align but that is the lemast of my concern. Attached is a screenshot of my laptop running MurrinaFancyCandy with SystemGX. It looks VERY close to the one in the picture on Cimi's website, even has the thumbnail image in the top left of each window (which your attachment does not have). Now if I change to different "Controls" in the theme details, the orange will switch to blue, green, red, etc. If I change my Border to something else, it will switch to black. Key question would be what window border is being used in that picture.

This is quite confusing.

Indeed... :(

But maybe it's better to ask Cimi via PM how he has managed to get the look you're searching for.

Cheers!!!

Hi!

I installed the engine thanks to the .deb package and then installed some themes. But on my system, it doesn't look like the screenshots, especially buttons which are not flat at all. Menus are also pretty ugly.

I tried to use the configurator, and set everything to flat just to see, but it doesn't seem to change anything. I also tried to log out / in without luck.

Any idea?

EDIT:

I found, the libraries were not installed in the correct directory (/usr/lib/gtk-2.0/2.10.0/engines). Looks good now :-)

Hi,

Love the theme, but it does not apply to all applications, for instance synaptic.

I am using the latest version i compiled myself on ubuntu feisty.

Hi,

You use Synaptic with root rights (as a root user) and that is why it looks like that.
Any application you start as a root looks like that Synaptic in screenshot.

You need to set the root user to also use the theme of your choice.
(in terminal "sudo gnome-theme-manager")

Someone else will correct me if I'm wrong, hopefully :)

You need to set the root user to also use the theme of your choice.
(in terminal "sudo gnome-theme-manager")

Another way to do that is to create links to your ".themes" and ".icons" directories in "/root", so that all the themes installed for you are also available for root. This way, root applications will always use the same theme as yours without having to "sudo gnome-theme-manager" on every theme change.

To create the links, simply type this in a terminal:

sudo ln -sf ~/.themes /root/.themes
sudo ln -sf ~/.icons /root/.icons

HERE (http://www.aehunter.net/Files/gtk2-engines-murrine_0.40.1-0ubuntu1_i386.deb) is a .deb built for Feisty of version 0.40.1.

This is just the engine.

If there are any issues on Feisty let me know.

Can you compile a version with --enable-macmenu?? I can't seem to get this engine to compile on my feisty. It complains about my gtk version.

Edit: Nevermind, I found the dependency.
