I am using a Windows 10 machine to post this.

I tried to upgrade from 17.10 desktop to 18.04. I can only get to tty login screen. After logging in that way a message of several lines, then it goes to a tty command line.

The message appears to indicate 18.04 server was installed and not desktop.

I should have backed up my desktop files - everything else is in either dropbox or google drive. I need to get those files then I can do a clean install.

Is it possible to fix this in another way?

Thanks,
Al

If you upgraded, your /home directory should be intact.

You could try installing a desktop with "sudo apt install ubuntu-desktop" or choose another desktop (https://www.linuxtrainingacademy.com/install-desktop-on-ubuntu-server/).

Apparently I read things wrong. The home directory is intact. I paid closer attention to the tty login screen and it does not show server at the top.

Sorry for the post.

Thanks for your help.
