Is this by design? During the upgrade process I was presented with using either lightdm or gdm3, which I chose lightdm. On boot I go right to Unity, which is fine. Was this by design?

16.04 Ubuntu to 18.04 release upgrader's will get upgraded lightdm, unity, compiz, ect. packages because they already had them installed.
On a 18.04 fresh install unity, ect would need to be specifically installed. There is a new meta package for that, ubuntu-unity.desktop
