17.10 to 18.04 but end up with terminal screen

Upgrade installation seemed to work fine but now I end up with a black login screen, no GUI.
How can I get the GUI back, please?

Hello!

Did you have any propritary drivers installed in 17.10 (in particular video drivers) that you did not uninstall prior to the update?

However the fix does not stick. After a reboot, I still get the terminal screen and need to login and type "startx". How can I get to boot properly!
