On Virtualbox, lastest version 5.2
Lubuntu 16.04 installs fine, with zero problems, but later versions do not work. I downloaded Lubuntu 18.04, I select language, then select install Lubuntu, and then a black screen appears and nothing else, not even a blinking underscore. I tried 32 bit and 64 bit of versions 17 and 18, but the same problem, just a black screen after selecting "Install Lubuntu". Not even the option "Try Lubuntu" works.

My OS is Win 8 64 bit. Lenovo Edge 15.

Is https://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2388980 related?

Also, some of the defaults for VB aren't great. http://blog.jdpfu.com/2012/09/14/solution-for-slow-ubuntu-in-virtualbox is a little old, but still has some important settings.

I have Lubuntu running well in VBox version 5.2.10, though I admit I installed it mid-November 2017 from a daily ISO image.
Host system is Xubuntu 16.04 using kernel 4.4.0-122.

I got a similar issue. Once I selected the installation language and the option to install the OS on virtualbox machine, I got an unusable flickering screen. I fixed the issue by increasing the video card memory to 128 MB.
