I have been running Linux Mint Mate for years .....

Well I am giving Ubuntu another go (only because my one commercial application ONLY officially supports Ubuntu).
I have installed Ubuntu 18.04 in a vmware VM to see if I can get round various problems and idiosyncrasies.
First problem I encountered is I can not access any network resources ... according to file sharing that is because neither Samba or NFS is installed.
Seriously? A 'modern' operating system with no network capability ...

OK, so I will crank up the package manager and install Samba ... what package manager?
I have searched for software, package, manager, update, yada, yada, yada, yada ... and found nothing.

So what is Ubuntu's current equivalent of 'Synaptic Package Manager' and why the heck is it so well hidden?

sudo apt install synaptic

You need to install synaptic manually it doesn't come by default.
