After i have processed both sudo aptitude update and
sudo aptitude dist-upgrade, the global menu got broken. Moreover, when I right click on the desktop and select "Change Desktop Background", instead of "Appearance" settings, I get "System Settings" window (from which I can of course get to the appearance settings by clicking "Appearance"). Could there be any solution? Thanks

What desktop session? (gnome or unity or something else)
What version of Ubuntu? 14.04 or 16.04 or 17.10 or other)

I offered no idea, only wanted you to post the basic information about what system was in use.

That said.
One thought would be to log out and into the guest session.
(Toggle to guest by using the up/down arrows to switch users at the login screen)

If in the guest session, does the problems persist?

This should help determine if it's system-wide or user-specific.
