I installed 12.04 (booted from cd) to an Hdd. There is no ‘File’ etc at top left and nothing will launch other than the browser and the Office apps. The shut down does nothing and I have to turn off the pc.
I’ve reinstalled twice. Seems weird. The cd version runs ok.
Any help would be appreciated.

12.04 lost support years ago. I suggest you install a supported version, 17.10 or 16.04 LTS.

12.04 reached EOL a long time ago so there is no way to update it not even security updates, I recommend going with 16.04 or 18.04 which is still in testing but will be released the 26th of April, I have been running it from the beginning of testing with almost no issues and now it is working great.

Thanks for your rapid response. I’ll try the later versions.
