I myself have had several new installations abort because grub would not install, and a frustrating time it was for this long-time Ubuntu user.
Finally, I realized that, when the warning about booting in UEFI mode, do your want to continue? comes up, CHOOSE "GO BACK!"
The installation will proceed smooth as silk, hopefully.
When booting, of course, never choose UEFI to boot the USB or DVD.
I hope this helps someone who has found themself in the same dilemma.
