After a kernel upgrade and running VLC and Firefox the kernel eventually hangs. It never cores or anything just slowly burns the CPU until you cannot do anything. If I load 4.4.0-109-generic kernel no such issue exists. I suspect a Spectry/Meltdown fix in 112 is causing the issue on AMD chipsets?

I have been investigating a bit more and think this has something to do with VLC, but not sure what yet.
This is installed, though my /etc/release file says I have Xubuntu 16.04.3

ii libvlc5 2.2.2-5ubuntu0.16.04.4 amd64 multimedia player and streamer library
ii libvlccore8 2.2.2-5ubuntu0.16.04.4 amd64 base library for VLC and its modules
ii vlc 2.2.2-5ubuntu0.16.04.4 amd64 multimedia player and streamer
ii vlc-data 2.2.2-5ubuntu0.16.04.4 all Common data for VLC
ii vlc-nox 2.2.2-5ubuntu0.16.04.4 amd64 multimedia player and streamer (without X support)
ii vlc-plugin-notify 2.2.2-5ubuntu0.16.04.4 amd64 LibNotify plugin for VLC
ii vlc-plugin-samba 2.2.2-5ubuntu0.16.04.4 amd64 Samba plugin for VLC

I think this is a definite issue with VLC, not the kernel.
