Pop-up dialogue Boxes were not appearing (things such as File>save as; or right-click>save link as; etc.)
After installing NVidia 390.12 (which STILL didn't work), THEN switching BACK to X.org video driver (which I was using originally), the dialogue boxes show up! I have NO CLUE why, but it works!
Also, the above method solved an issue of hanging at reboot or shutdown with a flashing cursor. Hope this helps someone! I've been installing and uninstalling graphics drivers all day!
I should mention Specs:
MOBO: ASUS Z97 Mark 1
CPU: Intel i7 4790K
CPU Cooling: Corsair H100i
Wifi PCI Cards--not sure at the moment (atheros and Broadcom)
GPU: NVidia Geforce GT 640 (Bane of my OS-existence)
OS: Ubuntu 17.10
RAM: Patriot Something 32GB @ 1600 Mhz
