"Indiana's Department of Education has moved 22,000 students onto Linux desktops, (http://www.crn.com/sections/breakingnews/breakingnews.jhtml?articleId=192201386) and it's looking like that's only going to accelerate with SLED 10, Linspire, and other distributions getting better."

These days schools should be jumping at the chance to use Linux. Most of the time they are only used for web surfing and word processing, at least that's how it was in my school. Sure, the art classes used Macs, and it seems only fair to have a few computers still run Windows for certain purposes. But I think that a majority would have been fine with Linux. I imagine that the school would save a lot of money, given that they had someone who could service these machines.

Then again it seems that this would only be a good idea if the school was about to upgrade the computers. When I was a junior in high school, the school upgraded just about every computer for a newer Dell. It would not make much sense for them to change over to linux the following year. It would have been a great idea had they though about it before they bought all those licenses for Windows. Another thing I just remembered is that every piece of software I have seen to ship with textbooks is made for Windows. That would be a problem.

I remember reading about the Linux switchover in Indiana a while back. From what I recall, they have built these new desks where the computer monitor is under a sheet of glass, so you can have a textbook on top, and then switch to the computer with no need to move to a different desk. Pretty clever I thought...

Also makes it easier to hide what you were looking on the computer screen. :D

That's another advantage of Linux then. When the kids are looking at porn, the school network won't get viruses :D
