A while back my laptop suffered a shock event (was accidentally dropped) and damaging the hard drive to the point where, while I could see it via live-CD it was heavily corrupted/damaged to the point where the data was heavily damaged and it can't boot anymore (initially windows could kinda boot to a point, but drive was corrupted and now not even reinstalling of it or windows will work) so I need a new hard drive for it. However the HP direct replacement is way too expensive for me ($128) and is set to back order.

778186-005 Part is on backorder, quantity in stock is 0
500GB SATA hard disk drive - 5,400 RPM, 7.0mm form factor - Raw drive, does not include hard drive bracket or screws

I have however found this on newegg: https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?item=1Z4-0002-001C2

Do you think it would work fine as a replacement, and if so, you think I'd be fine if I went with the 1TB verison?

My laptop is a HP 15-g021nr. Thanks in advance.

They look compatible to me. Most HDDs are. Perhaps you should make sure that it's returnable, just in case, though the possibility of incompatibility is remote.

1TB should also work. 2.5" HDDs don't vary in physical size or layout. However, you may wish to consider a WD "Black" which is built to higher speeds and tolerances. You would be trading capacity for speed and reliability, so you have to decide what is more important to you.
