View Full Version : [SOLVED] 16.04 GT 710 Graphics card (gigabyte)-cant find driver

psyclone
December 12th, 2017, 11:12 PM
Hi,
I've just installed a new graphics card Gigabyte GT710. I've searched the Nvidia site, and have installed (in tern) 340 & 384 Nvidia drivers. Desktop is running-but I have the lowest possible resolution without the option to select the preferred res of 1920×1080. Which Nvidia driver would better suit? Also I've have installed using the ppa repository.

Thanks,

psyclone; Hey -

I run that same card on 16.04 ( Abit platform ) with no proprietary driver issues .
Show us what you presently have installed:

sudo find / -name "NVIDIA-Linux-*"
dpkg -l | grep -i nvidia*

see what we have to cleanup and then install the proper driver :
My use case:

sysop@x1604:~$ lspci -nnk | grep -iA3 vga
06:00.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: NVIDIA Corporation GK208 [GeForce GT 710B] [10de:128b] (rev a1)
Subsystem: eVga.com. Corp. Device [3842:2712]
Kernel driver in use: nvidia
Kernel modules: nvidiafb, nouveau, nvidia_384_drm, nvidia_384

my thoughts on the matter

Looks like you have both 340 & 387 installed.
You have to totally purge one install before installing another.

Updated driver search by nVidia model, do not download, just check correct driver version
http://www.geforce.com/drivers

Looks like it still uses the newest or 384 series.
Did you get 387 from ppa?

If you have installed any version, you must purge first, old will conflict with new as new install does not overwrite old version.
sudo apt-get remove --purge nvidia-*
sudo apt-get purge nvidia* bumblebee primus bbswitch-dkms
This xorg file may not exist, so if error that would be ok
sudo mv /etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf.backup

sudo ubuntu-drivers devices
If you just want default version - recommended one
sudo ubuntu-drivers autoinstall
Or you can manually choose any in list.
sudo apt-get install nvidia-XXX

Hi, Thanks for your post.
Yes I installed drivers using ppa. I'll try purging all nvidia drivers and let you know.

Hi,
Thanks again for your post. But I ran the following (below), but the problem still persists i.e. I can't increase the resolution. Before installing the 384 driver from ppa repository, I checked to see if all the Nvidia components were removed: and they were. So the 384 drive is only driver installed currently. I'm running dvi lead to monitor, does that matter?

sudo apt-get remove --purge nvidia-*
sudo apt-get purge nvidia* bumblebee primus bbswitch-dkms

psyclonel Well ! Not -

That do tell the tale that the nvidia graphic's module (driver) is not loaded .
The question now is why not ?

OK, is this a EFI system ? and if so we will require that 'secure boot ' be disabled in the bios ( firmware ) settings. Confirm the state of ' secure boot ' and we continue to troubleshoot .

Confirm at this time also that the system sees the hardware and it is identified:

Thanks for your patience. The 'boot security settings' only has the option(s) to set two type of passwords, none of which are currently set. I'm not sure if that answers your question about the 'efi system' though.

You show the .run files downloaded from nVidia directly. We generally do not recommend those files as you have to reinstall (in effect) with each new kernel update. It is not fully integrated into Ubuntu.
How you uninstall those is different, but I do not know procedure. But they also have to be uninstalled to avoid conflicts.

You generally install nVidia from Ubuntu repository. You may have to boot with nomodeset option and can use System Settings, Software & updates & drivers tab.
Or you can install from command line.
If a very new card, you can get very new nVidia drivers from the ppa which are reconfigured for Ubuntu.

You at end want only one nVidia driver that is correct version for your card.
Any additional nVidia driver does not uninstall previous version and creates conflicts.

Bashing-om
December 15th, 2017, 08:07 PM
psyclone; Uh Huh ....

See and heed oldfred's last .

per nvidia:

Note that many Linux distributions provide their own packages of the NVIDIA Linux Graphics Driver in the distribution's native package management format. This may interact better with the rest of your distribution's framework, and you may want to use this rather than NVIDIA's official package.

Let's try this:

cd Downloads
./NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-384.98.run --uninstall
./NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-340.104.run --uninstall
cd

We must also remove the 381 driver that is in trash - properly . Presently I do not know how we are going to accomplish this feat.

Show us what is :
post back the result of terminal command:

ls -al home/e2-desktop/.local/share/Trash/files/

and maybe I can get a better handle on what we have to deal with.

get all cleaned up and then install the driver from our repo as per nvidia's instruction.

there is a way that seems right - but

leads to a broken system

Hi,
Thank you both for your assistance and patience.
But can I say-when executing the following commands the syntax is incorrect and running without 'sudo' permission is denied.

:~/Downloads$ sudo .NVIDIA-Linus-x86_64-384.98.run --uninstall
sudo: /NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-384.98.run: command not found

But given that. Can't I simply delete these drivers manually through the 'Downloads' folder? Also, just because I've downloaded the driver from Nvidia's site, that doesn't mean that these drivers are all installed? And I purged all Nvidia Drivers before my latest install of the 384.98 driver. But I can run purge again and show result?

psyclone; Yuk -

As you can also see, the module (driver) is not building .

Above my skill set to know different than secure boot preventing it .

Maybe the kernel header files missing .. perhaps ?

What shows:

dpkg -l | grep linux-

just do not know

psyclone; Ah Haw !

No header files to tell the kernel how to build the graphic's module !

what kernel are you presently booting - where I expect the -91 kernel version -?

uname -r

You are way out of date, also:

sysop@x1604:~$ uname -r
4.4.0-104-generic
sysop@x1604:~$

Let's see the result of:

sudo apt update
sudo apt install linux-generic
sudo apt full-upgrade

where I expect that linux-image-generic and linux-headers-generic will also be pulled in as dependencies. Else, we got more work to do.
Reboot - and now what kernel are you booting ?

If this runs clean. and we get the driver to build - then we have a bit of clean up to do.

on the right path now

a bit of clean up .. those files from the dpkg output marked "rc" ( -r-emoved but -c-onfig files remain).
Run:

dpkg -l | awk '/^rc/{print $2}' | xargs sudo dpkg -P

While there is no built in way to remove all of your configuration information from your removed packages you can remove all configuration data from every removed package. To purge all removed but not yet purged packages, where The state is rc, the package is removed, but the config files are not removed....

happy trails to you

The last cleanup step is important, because without it I was getting a "OpenGL unsupported." So thank-you for your help!

dpkg -l | awk '/^rc/{print $2}' | xargs sudo dpkg -P
