17.10 installed with 64 bit and Synaptic won't execute

The 17.10 update on 64bit will not execute Synaptic or SpiderOak. Synaptic asks for owner but then disappears.
All other apps (numerous) ok

See posts 45-47 . . . . for solution. This has to do with 17.10 on wayland versus 17.10 on xorg.

User can switch at login, but read below thread for more details.
