I'm a new student at UMBC (University of Maryland - Baltimore County), and I was trying to register my vehicle at their counter to get a parking permit. The computer was using Mozilla, and I was thought "hmmm". Then I got lost in the web site (where you register the car) and clicked around (The browser can't be shut down, so you don't know what's in there in terms of an OS).
When I clicked on "Bookmarks" I saw an entry I wasn't expecting: Debian... Well, accordingly:
1. That old computer was using Linux (a public terminal where security was a primary concern). Maryland universities are usually in love with Microsoft.
2. Linux can disappear (http://www.linuxjournal.com/node/1000070)
3. IT in UMBC is good.
Just an observation :)
PS> did you see a linux terminal in your school?
