In Unity when pressing F11, F12 can control brightness, and indicator icon will be shown on the top right, notifying me the current status. So does the F1, F2, and F3 for volume control (and its indicator icon). These all works fine without a problem in Unity desktop environment.

Now I want to test switching to i3 wm. In that environment I can config to control volume and brightness by binding multimedia key to Fn keys such as F1, F2, F3, F11, F12, and so on. However, there is no indicator like brightness. So I only notice the brightness reach zero when the screen completely goes dark. This poses the same problem for volume control that I often increase volume to much that the sound is too noisy when headset is plugged in.

Therefore my question:
- How does Unity control to display brightness, volume, etc. indicator icon? For instance, what trigger to display that icon.
- In i3 is there any way to achieve the same visual effect as Unity?

My Unity desktop is Ubuntu 16.04 LTS, and i3 4.11.

Thanks
