Hi
I upgraded to 17.10 and it's stuck and I'm not sure where too look. It never switches to gui, just sits there.

There are many error messages on the boot screen... Then

I can switch to a terminal (ctl-alt f2), log in and:
The FS is read only (it can be remounted rw), there's no DNS (but I can ping my router). I'm not sure where to look at logifiles, though.

I can boot into safemode... But its of little help. If I try to start the network it complains of some "power" option in the system bus config?

Advice as to where to look would be welcome. Thanks.

Have you considered abandoning the upgrade and installing 17.10 clean ?

Last week, I tried in-place upgrade 17.04 -> 17.10 and after several days trying to figure things out, deleted the partition and installed 17.10.

Meanwhile, no DNS was a problem I experienced, and the problem seemed to be a missing or mis-configured /etc/resolv.conf symlink. The clean 17.10 install has:

/etc/resolv.conf -> /run/systemd/resolve/stub-resolv.conf

Yeah - next step if there's no easy fix.

The thing is, no rw file system, no log files.

I tried fixing resolve - but the fixes get lost / over written some where.

Is this system dual-booted with another OS?
Were there any error messages during the release-upgrade?
What are the 'many' error messages on the boot screen? Those may be important.
Can yo be more specific about the system bus config error?

Look at logfiles in /var/log/. Start with syslog.

There where no error at installation.

The "many error" flashed passed the boot up screen (ro file system, so I can't grab them) but the ones I saw where like "systemctl failed to start" network interface / colored.service / name resolution / systemd-resolvd / gdm.services and others.

Then stops at
Started Thermal Daemon
And
Started network manager script dispatcher service.

Single boot.

The bus message is

Dbus-daemon [1038] unknown group "power" in message bus configuration file

just to say, I went for the igouy option... fresh install. Thanks for the attention anyway.

Lots of settings / installations to re-do, but I'm guessing this is such a big update, it'd've never really worked well.

Should have been 18.00
