dpkg was interrupted, you must manually run 'sudo dpkg --configure -a' to correct the problem

Except that causes GNOME Display Manager to start-up which freezes the machine and prevents dpkg finishing.

The hardware works fine with a 17.10 desktop bootable USB. I'm using it to write this.

Seems like my only option is to accept that the 17.04 -> 17.10 in-place update was a failure, that I've already wasted too much effort with, re-install clean and re-do all the previous set-up work.

(I stopped using Gentoo so I wouldn't need to deal with the upgrade pain).

I gave up -- deleted the partitions and installed from a 17.10 desktop bootable USB. I'm using the new clean install to write this.
