Update 17.04 to 17.10 lockup

I am having problems updating from 17.04 to 17.10.
Downloaded the 64bit iso and the try Ubuntu works okay.
Install as update It gets to the first login screen I enter use and password and the screen locks.
Try to reload again by a clean install the same happens.
Had to reload 17.04 and tried to do an upgrade the same happens again.
Could this issue be down to the screen driver?
The M/B is a AMD processor NVIDIA GeForce7050M-M Athlon 64 CPU.

After asking 17.04 to upgrade to 17.10 and booting, 17.10 will not accept my login password. Any fix for this?

Not sure if it could be the same problem for you: I am using the language German-Swiss with y qwertz keyboard and when the language is not yet loaded, I need to switch e.g. Z for Y. If you use english US, it must be another problem, if you use another language, then input your password according to the us keyboard and it should solve your problem.
