View Full Version : [SOLVED] Trouble Installing 16.04LTS on New (to me) HP 6305

Never had trouble installing Ubuntu before. Today I got a HP 6305 with Windows 10 pre-installed. The first thing I did was to install Ubuntu 16.04LT along side the Windows partition from a USB flash drive. It goes fine, gets to the 'reboot now' screen and reboots. When it comes up, it gets to the maroon colored screen where the ubuntu logo and progress dots are, but the logo and progress never comes up. I tried reinstalling, this time selecting the 'try before you buy' option and that boots up fine. Yet when I reboot, I am still stuck at the maroon / no logo screen.

Any help/advice? Thanks.

-=[ EDIT ]=-

I looked at the sticky regarding this and I tried to boot to recovery mode. It gets as far as

[240.365998] [<c0104087>] kernel_thread_helper +0x7/0x10

and then goes black and stays there. I know I tend to ramble, but there is just too much information in that sticky for me to follow. Again, any help would be greatly appreciated.

From the live boot please run
sudo lshw -sanitize > lshw.txt and post lshw.txt in CODE tags.

I don't know if this means anything, but I tried booting into a text console again, and I noticed that it seemed to hang for about two minutes with five instances of

request_modprobe: runaway loop modprobe binfmt-464c

before moving on and finally hanging on the kernel_thread_helper line.

request_modprobe: runaway loop modprobe binfmt-464c

That usually signals a mismatch between the word size of the kernel and the userspace modprobe (one is 32bit and one is 64bit) which means you are likely booting a 32-bit kernel with a 64-bit OS.

I am using a 64-bit version of 16.04, but does this line in lshw, listed under CPU, not indicate that the CPU is 64-bit?

So... I haven't kept up with the advances in computer technology as of late, ever since it became cheaper to just buy a computer than build one for scratch. I didn't even know that computers had Electronic Fuel Injection now. (That's a joke, kid.)

Anyway, I must have inadvertently turned off something related to UEFI when I was trying to get the computer to boot from a USB flash drive. Once I reset that, I was able to reinstall Ubuntu and now it boots fine.

I do have another small problem, though. I no longer get a grub menu. It just boots directly into Linux without asking. What do I need to do to get the grub menu back?

Pushing Left Shift or Escape repeatedly during boot should give you the menu.

I was able to get the grub menu to come up with the left shift key, but the Windows partition is no longer listed. It was there before I re-enabled the UEFI boot options in the BIOS (?) settings, but LInux wouldn't boot. Now Linux will boot, but Windows is missing.

Win-win.

Now you can give Ubuntu a chance and see how it works. Windows is still there and if some day Ubuntu does not solve all your problems then it can be resurrected.

Now you can give Ubuntu a chance and see how it works. Windows is still there and if some day Ubuntu does not solve all your problems then it can be resurrected.

lol... I use Ubuntu EXCLUSIVELY on all of my systems. I just left the Windows OS with 35gb of space just in case I decided that I needed it for some reason in the future. I also purposely left the recovery partition, just in case. I've been running Ubuntu for about ten years now and I would NEVER look back to windows. However, I am the kind of person who hates it when something doesn't work like it should, hence my wanting to get the grub menu to show the windows system :)

Sounds like me.
Sorry, I can't help you here but I'm sure there are many users around with experience in dual boot settings.
