i did a sudo apt-get remove putty and a sudo apt-get install putty from the terminal to make sure that I had the latest release loaded, and still no change !!!

Just curious why you would even need PuTTY in Linux? Ubuntu includes regular ssh for ssh client, scp, sftp, or sftp is somewhat easier as a gui using your file manager. I only use PuTTY in Windows, which I rarely run anymore since I lost my job Nov 2015 and my income is managing investments in my retirement accounts (with thinkorswim, a Java app in Linux).

+1 for efflandt's explanation. No need for Putty, just use Nautilus for a more pleasant experience.
Edit: It's been a while since I used it but after setting up a connection try clicking "Add to favourites".
