I have a little ubuntu server on my network which I mostly use as a mumble and samba server. I want to install a GUI on it so I can VNC into it and run Handbrake on it to do a bunch of batch video encoding. This server only ever had a monitor hooked up during install, since then it's just had power and an ethernet cable to it. Now when I hook up a monitor to it, the monitor gets no signal. So... not sure what the issue is.

Regardless, I want to install a desktop environment on it so I can vnc into it. Is this all possible from the command line over PuTTY without having monitor support?

Any steps in the right direction would be great!

Hi wh33t.
Hopefully this link will provide you with some ideas of what to install. https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/LowMemorySystems

Once you have installed a gui and there is still no signal to your monitor we will look into that.
