Keyboard and touchpad stop working on XPS 13 after upgrade 16.04 -> 17.04

After upgrading from Ubuntu 16.04 to 17.04 both the keyboard and trackpad have stopped working. I don't have a USB keyboard but my USB mouse also does not work when plugged in. The keyboard does work for the grub menu upon boot-up, however. Any suggestions?

EDIT : rebooting to a previous kernel doesn't help but the keyboard works fine in recovery mode
