I installed a Lubuntu 17.04 on a USB. Not a live USB, but just a normal installation. I think that I made the USB according to instructions and it should work.

It is working well in several ways, and it does remember my previous Lubuntu session. However, updating does not work.
System crashed completely during one update, in which I also asked it to install libreoffice-calc and libreoffice-writer (Synaptic Package Manager). None of the commands in GUI worked any more and I could only force shut-down via power-button.
Fortunately, I was able to start the system again after that, but updating or installing those new packages does not work.
One error message was concerning the package nmap.

I really need something to open doc and xls and neither Abiword (blinking) or Gnumeric (opens files incorrectly) works for me.

What partitioning did you use on the USB (separate boot?) and how full are they? Normally, an install to a USB should work just like to an internal hard disk, only slower. Post the results of df
for that information.
