HOW FRUSTRATING !! Ubuntu 16.04 LTS was running OK but i foolishly upgraded to 17.04 and then could not access the internet to update software. After many attempts to restore the ethernet cable connection i reinstalled 16.04 but now it too fails with the Windows equivalent of "BSOD". The reinstall appeared to complete successfully and allowed access ONCE - only OS updates were then downloaded. A "restart" was required but during restart a blank blue screen appears and hangs. The CD used to install 16.04 was burned in 2016. Is there a later version of 16.04 which hopefully will work correctly ?

Hello!

Have you checked the install media for rust, cracks, dents, nicks and burrs?

Actually, scratches and delamination are more likely. ;) I would expect that an image used before on that machine would work again. Check the media physically. Then see if you can boot to the media and check the integrity of the media.

We can move on from there.

The disk booted successfully running Win 7 and ran OK as "live CD".
