I'm trying to install Ubuntu 16.04.2 on a partition of my hard drive. I have created a bootable USB drive to install it, I reboot and select the USB drive and it takes me to the screen where I can try ubuntu without installing, install ubuntu, check for disk errors, etc., and whenever I select any of those options my screens quit receiving signals. After about 30 seconds to a minute of this, I hear the two drum-like error noises and the screens remain off.

Anyone experience anything similar or might have an idea of what is going on and how to fix it?

Sounds like a video card issue. Take a look at this and try it: https://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2364163&highlight=nomodeset

That will probably get you past that hurdle. After you get past that and get it installed, then go to Additional Drivers and install what it recommends. Reboot.
