Partitioning Help

Hello, I'm new on this os and we're studying Ubuntu 14.04 64bit Server. There is a problem that for example, I want to upgrade my OS from 32 to 64 bit, but there is a large file i want to keep on my home directory. How will I proceed with the partition disk part of the installation If i will try to install this 64bit version on a bootable storage to keep this large file while upgrading the os. Thank you

Backup anything you want to keep. Then have at it trying different things.
