I've compiled and installed a few software on my ubuntu. What happens when I upgrade os to a new version. Do I need to uninstall my installed software first? Or does ubuntu remove or replace everything in / including /usr/local/ or /opt?

ps: I don't use checkinstall because it gives errors with some software. But I have the source folder, so I can run uninstall without any problems.

Upgrading to a new version of Ubuntu won't remove your compiled software so you would have to uninstall manually. You'd have the opportunity to review what would be removed during the upgrade before you commit.
