. does the upgrade handle RAID1? I have read that only the server installation supports RAID for 16.04; I currently have a desktop installation.
. if not, do I have to revert to non-RAID disks before upgrading? and how would you do that?

Thanks in advance for any answer (to *this* question, please)

Then I would say that the solution is as mentioned in that thread: Use the server install and add a desktop environment later.

thank you, Mørgæs - makes sense, I suppose. I just wonder whether I can rely on the (semi-)automatic upgrade utility in the update manager, or whether I should do a fresh install. I guess the implication here is that a fresh install is needed, which seems to mean spending much time getting afresh all packages I am currently using. Is that so, you think?

I would vote for the fresh install. Stopped upgrading many years ago due to unstable results.
