There are installation guides in the Ubuntu documentation:

https://help.ubuntu.com/lts/installation-guide/index.html

These guides apply to Lubuntu as well as Ubuntu - no difference in the installation process; 16.04 guide will also work for 17.04.

Another one in Community Docs:

Is this an old machine? Most are 64 bit now.
But if older & less than 2GB of RAM then 32 bit and Lubuntu are the better choices.

Are you dual booting with another operating system or Windows or erasing entire hard drive and installing Lubuntu?
Have you done good back ups of all your data first?

If originally Windows, it may have used all 4 primary partitions allowed with MBR(msdos) partitioning.

My laptop already has 4 primary partitions: how can I install Ubuntu?

Good advice on how to handle all four primary partitions used. - srs5694

Be sure to create recovery DVD(s) first. And a Windows repair CD.
