Hi, I just installed Ubuntu 16.10 (amd64 + x86 64, mini iso) on a Lenovo T530 (previously Debian which worked with no problem at all). My plan was to do this first as a bare install (in the installer, chose base system only), then install a GUI from command line.
There's no command prompt. There's a blinking cursor in the top left, and the HD light blinks a bit after bootup, but nothing more. It goes dark after a while, and then can be awakened with some presses of non-input keys such as Ctrl, Shift or Alt, but never gives a command prompt.
I did some web searching, and some people had success with Ctrl + C, but this has no effect for me.
It was a very standard install, chose "expert" mode to get the option of no gui but then accepted most of the defaults, en_US, made an account, etc. - nothing unusual.
How can I get a command prompt?

LATER EDIT: Didn't have time to wait for replies, resorted to the LTS 16.04. Apparently it's necessary to use the "server" version to be able to opt out of the standard GUI.
