hi,
After i messed up my opensuse installation i wanted to give another os a try but debian didnt have firmware for my laptop so i gave ubuntu a try.
I like it so far but i have a problem and i dont know how to fix it because im not an experianced linux user.
so i installed kde plasma using

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:kubuntu-ppa/backports
sudo apt update && sudo apt install kubuntu-desktop
sudo apt update && sudo apt dist-upgrade

When i first booted into kde plasma it wouldnt work got a black screen and a mouse so i switched back to unity and deleted kde plasma.
Then i reinstalled plasma and it worked!
But now i cant see any programs in the menu. i can use programs using alt+spacebar but i would like my desktop environment to be fully functional.
Does anyone know how to fix this.

Since you don't seem to have much invested in this machine yet, I suggest you start over and install Kubuntu rather than adding KDE to an Ubuntu desktop. I'd stick with 16.04LTS for now since it has long-term support.

Here it is: http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/kubuntu/releases/16.04.2/release/
