I use Ub 16.04 w/ Unity, and yesterday I decided to check out Gnome DE by creating a dual boot by installing Ub 16.10.

I thought 16.10 would have Gnome DE, but what I got looked the same as Unity. So, I searched around, and found instructions for installing Gnome via terminal, all went ok, but what I got still looked the same as Unity, and there wasn't any "DE option" menu during bootup.

What's going on?

What command to install?
proper way should be

sudo apt-get install gnome-shell
install and logout.
Then clicking on the icon next to the username in the login box at the login screen should have a GNOME option.
select it and login.

I was unaware of the choice icon at log in - thanks.
I think it's an improvement on Unity - a little more "flow" to it.

For anyone interested in seeing the future of Ubuntu as it happens, Here is where we get the very latest Ubuntu Gnome ISO image

http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/ubuntu-gnome/daily-live/current/

It should come with Gnome 3 shell as default. There are similarities with Unity as they are both built on similar software technologies but there are also visible differences in method

Regards.
